Ubiquiti Unifi Lite6 vs U6+

Ubiquiti UniFi U6+ vs. Lite 6: Which WiFi 6 Access Point is Right for You?

Ubiquiti Unifi is known for its reasonably priced, highly reliable Wireless Access Points (APs). Ubiquiti offers a relatively wide range of models, each designed for a specific scenario. Although having the choice is great, sometimes knowing which model is right for you can be confusing.

For home or small business users, Unifi's entry-level U6 Lite has been a go-to model since its release a couple of years ago. The U6 Lite is an updated version of their very popular AC Lite.

Now, a new model has appeared on the scene. The U6+ is a Wireless Access Point that appears, in many ways, to be very similar to the 6 Lite. It is slightly more expensive, but otherwise almost identical in appearance and features. So, let's find out which one is right for you!

Key differences between the U6 Lite and the U6+?

  1. The U6 Lite only supports WiFi 6 on 5 GHz, while the U6+ also offers WiFi 6 on 2.4 GHz.
  2. The U6+ has a much higher potential throughput than the U6 Lite: 573.5 MBps on 2.4 GHz and 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz, compared to 300 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 1201 Mbps on 5 GHz for the 6 Lite.
  3. The U6+ uses less PoE than the U6 Lite: 9 W vs. 12 W.
  4. The U6 Lite has Bluetooth for easy setup on mobile devices, while the U6+ does not, making setup trickier in standalone mode.
  5. The U6+ is slightly more expensive than the U6 Lite.

Should I buy Ubiquiti Unifi U6 Lite or U6+?

Both the U6 Lite and the U6+ are great Wireless Access Points and will ensure your WiFi connection is about as good as it can be.

However, overall the U6+ is probably the better option. As internet speeds increase, the requirement for faster WiFi speeds favours the newer WiFi 6 standard over the previous WiFi 5. Plus, as a general rule, it is better to buy newer models as technology continues to improve.

Another plus for the U6+ is the lower PoE requirements. This is always welcome, particularly for those looking to use the Unifi Lite PoE switches which have a more limited PoE output than some of the larger models.
